The Spaniards efforts to settle colonies in the Atlantic region of Darien failed mostly due to insalubrious location and food scarcity, taking them to make the decision to move to the Pacific Ocean, founding Old Panama on August 15, 1519.
Panama rapidly became an expensive, rich and legendary place, attracting filibusters and buccaneers to rove along its coasts. The Pirate Henry Morgan attacked and sacked the city in 1671. The Spaniards decided to move the city to a location more healthful and easier to defend and in 1673 governor Antonio Fernandez de Cordoba founded the new Panama City on the peninsula situated on Ancon Hill slopes.
We invite you to enjoy a visit to the three cities in one: Old, Colonial, and Modern Panama with its unique history. |
